How to get to Soller: the options

Soller sits in a valley closed off by the Serra de Tramuntana, and for centuries the only way in was over a mountain pass. Today there are four usual ways to get there from Palma: public bus, train, car and taxi. You can also cycle, but that is for experienced riders.

No single option is best for everyone: it depends on whether you want to save money, arrive fast or make the journey part of the trip. The table below helps you choose.

Bus from Palma to Soller (TIB)

Mallorca's intercity public transport is run by TIB (Transport de les Illes Balears). One of its lines links Palma, Soller and Port de Soller, and it is the answer to the most common search: bus from Palma to Soller. In the 2026 summer timetable the Port de Soller to Palma line increased its daily services.

  • Where to catch it in Palma: intercity lines leave from the intermodal station at Plaça d'Espanya. Confirm the exact stop on tib.org or in the TIB app.
  • Timetable: it changes between summer and winter and between weekdays and holidays. Check the day's times on tib.org before you go.
  • Price: in 2026 TIB bus, train and metro trips are free for travellers using the Tarjeta Intermodal or the Tarjeta Unica. With a single ticket or a bank card you pay the normal fares, listed on tib.org.
  • Luggage: the road is mountainous and winding; keep that in mind with large suitcases.

Line numbers and times change from season to season, so do not rely on old tables: always check the official information for the current season.

By the Soller train

The wooden train from 1912 links Plaça d'Espanya station in Palma with central Soller in about an hour, passing through 13 tunnels and over a viaduct. It is the most scenic option, but it has few departures a day and costs more than the bus.

Timetables, prices, tickets and tips are all in the Soller train guide.

By car: the Ma-11 and the Soller tunnel

The main route from Palma is the Ma-11 towards Soller, which goes through the Soller tunnel, about 3 km long. The tunnel was a toll road for years, but it has been free since 29 December 2017, when the barriers were lifted.

  • Distance: about 30 km from Palma, normally 30 to 45 minutes without traffic.
  • Alternative: the old road over the Coll de Soller, with many bends and views of the valley; slower, for those who are not in a hurry.
  • Queues: in summer and at weekends there can be traffic leaving Palma and at the tunnel.
  • Parking: this is the hard part. Read our guide to parking in Soller before you go.

From Palma airport to Soller

Palma airport (PMI) has no direct connection to Soller. The two usual options are:

  • Taxi or private transfer: the most comfortable choice with luggage or at night. Book ahead and confirm the price before you get in. More in taxi and transport in Soller.
  • Public transport: airport bus to Palma city centre, then bus or train to Soller. It is the cheapest option, but takes longer and needs a change. Check airport services on tib.org and on the EMT Palma website.

To reach Port de Soller from the airport, the journey is the same as far as Soller, then you continue by bus or on the Soller tram.

From other parts of Mallorca

  • From Valldemossa and Deià: along the Ma-10, the Tramuntana coastal road, with bends and sea views. It is slow but very beautiful.
  • From Andratx: also on the Ma-10, following the coast.
  • From Pollença and the north: the Ma-10 crosses the mountains and reaches Soller, but it is a long mountain drive; plan plenty of time.
  • From the south and east: the simplest way is to go to Palma first and continue to Soller on the Ma-11.

The Ma-10 has narrow stretches, cyclists and coaches: drive calmly and do not expect to be fast.

By bicycle

The Serra de Tramuntana is a well-known cycling destination. Riding to Soller from Palma is possible, but the climb to the Coll de Soller needs good fitness, and the tunnel carries traffic and is not recommended for cyclists. If you want to try, plan the route along the old road and carry lights and water.

Tips for an easy arrival

  • In high season leave early: traffic towards the mountains builds from mid-morning.
  • Without a car the bus is the simplest option; with a car, decide where to park before you arrive.
  • Check the Soller weather: in rain or fog, the mountain bends need extra care.
  • If you also plan to visit the Port, the tram links the town centre with the harbour. See the tram guide.

Palma to Sóller day trip: three itineraries

Yes, Sóller works perfectly as a day trip from Palma. Three tried-and-tested ways to organise it:

  1. Train there, bus back: leave Palma on the Sóller train (about an hour, 13 tunnels), stroll round the village, go down to the Port on the tram and return by TIB bus through the tunnel. The TIB bus also stops at the Port. Check the last bus time on tib.org before you go down.
  2. Car loop: drive up on the Ma-11 and the toll-free tunnel; return on the Ma-10 via Deià and Valldemossa, with bends and sea views. Allow time to stop, and read the parking guide first.
  3. Bus both ways: the cheapest option (free with the Tarjeta Intermodal or Única in 2026) and no parking worries.

More on the train, with prices and times, in the Sóller train guide.

Which option is best for you? A quick decision guide

  • Tight budget: TIB bus (free with the card in 2026).
  • Scenery and experience: the Sóller train, though it has few departures and costs more.
  • Lots of luggage or a late arrival: taxi or private transfer.
  • Freedom to stop and carry on around the island: car, with parking as the weak point.
  • Families with children: train plus tram makes a full-day outing; the bus is simpler with a pushchair.
  • Short on time: car or taxi; bus and train depend on timetables.

Where to start in Palma

  • Plaça d'Espanya: the Sóller train station and the intermodal station, where intercity lines leave from. Confirm the exact stop on tib.org or the TIB app.
  • Palma airport: no direct connection; go to Palma first or book a taxi or transfer.
  • To the Port without changing in Sóller: TIB lines link Palma and Port de Sóller through the tunnel. See times on tib.org.

Luggage, kids and motion sickness

  • Luggage: take a small day bag; the streets in the centre are cobbled and there are slopes.
  • Bends: the mountain road can upset children and anyone prone to car sickness. Sit at the front and avoid a big meal beforehand.
  • Pushchair: the Port promenade is flat; the centre has cobbles.
  • Water and sun protection: it gets hot in the valley in summer, especially if you park far away.
