What is happening

The island authority that manages the Ma-11 has scheduled a round of maintenance in the tunnel linking Palma with the Sóller valley. The main job is replacing the signage panels inside. The closures also allow crews to clear drains in this tunnel and in the sa Mola tunnel before the rainy season and to carry out the yearly safety and ventilation checks.

To work without traffic, the tunnel stays shut from 22:00 to 06:00, Monday to Thursday, from 19 October until 19 November. By day and at weekends it is open. According to Mallorca Global Mag, the Consell is putting about 700,000 euros into the works.

Do not mix this up with the autumn 2025 programme: it is a separate series of closures with its own dates.

Who can pass and what the detour is

Ambulances, fire engines, police and other emergency vehicles keep their access. Local press adds that TIB buses can also go through, although we did not find that detail in an official statement, so check your route and timetable with TIB.

Everyone else, including private cars, hire cars and taxis, has to take the Coll de Sóller (Ma-11A), the old road that crosses the range above the tunnel. The pass sits at roughly 497 metres above sea level.

What it means if you are visiting

The news reports only give the closure hours. What follows is our own practical reading for visitors:

  • Late airport arrivals: if your flight lands around 21:00 or later and you are staying in Sóller or the Port, expect to use the Coll road from Monday to Thursday.
  • Extra time: the Coll is slower than the tunnel. As our own planning margin, not an official figure, add at least 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Driving the Coll at night: it has many tight bends, limited visibility and sometimes cyclists or fog. If you do not know the mountains and feel uneasy, avoid it.
  • Taxis and transfers: taxis and private transfers also go over the Coll. Book ahead and give your real landing time.
  • Bus: check the TIB timetable for your date. We do not list night bus times because we could not verify them.
  • Train: the historic Palma to Sóller train runs on its own track and is not affected by the road closure; check its timetable before relying on it for a late arrival.

How to plan your arrival

  • Pick your day: if you can, arrive Friday to Sunday, when the tunnel is open all night.
  • Eat before the climb: if you land late, have dinner in Palma or at the airport rather than facing a mountain road tired and hungry.
  • Tell your accommodation: if reception closes early, say so in advance. The detour can cost more time than you expect.
  • Early departures: for an early flight, leave earlier and check whether your time falls inside the closure.
  • Fuel and weather: set off with a reasonably full tank and check the weather in Sóller; rain or fog makes the Coll more demanding.

What we do not know yet

The sources do not spell out the boundary hours, such as the small hours of Monday after Sunday night or of Friday after Thursday night. The literal reading is that the closure applies to Monday to Thursday nights, but if you will cross close to those limits, check the Consell de Mallorca or the traffic authority (DGT) before setting off. We also found no notice of an extension beyond 19 November.
