How the season has begun
According to Inselradio Mallorca (7 October 2026), the Sant Bartomeu cooperative accepted its first olives that week and produced the season's first oil. Picking is still slow for now: rain the previous weekend made fieldwork harder in the Serra de Tramuntana.
That same rain was good news for the trees. After a very dry and hot summer, many olives recovered and swelled, and the cooperatives point to a normal harvest. We found no kilo or litre figures for 2026, so we give none.
The cooperative has deep roots: a 2019 Mallorca Magazin report says it was founded in 1899 and brings together about 350 olive and orange growers in the area.
How olives are picked on the Tramuntana terraces
Sóller's groves climb the mountainside on dry-stone terraces, part of the Serra de Tramuntana cultural landscape. Many trees are very old and the slopes rule out big machinery, so a good share of the work is usually done by hand, with nets spread under the tree and small tools to loosen the fruit.
Olives need to reach the mill quickly. A Mallorca Magazin report says Sóller fruit is pressed soon after picking, and the campaign usually runs from mid-October into January.
DO Oli de Mallorca: what the seal guarantees
The Oli de Mallorca designation of origin requires olives to be grown, pressed and bottled on the island, and the oil to pass chemical and tasting tests before it carries the seal. In the Tramuntana the mallorquina variety (also called empeltre) dominates; the regulatory board accepts other varieties too, and the sources we read disagree on the full list, so check it on the board's website.
A handy buying tip: look for the harvest year on the label and, if you can, pick extra virgin oil from the current campaign.
When new oil appears and what it tastes like
Producers say that people with direct access to a mill usually buy the year's oil in October and November. Freshly pressed, oli nou is strongly grassy and peppery with a touch of bitterness that rounds out over the months. That is not a flaw: it is the sign of fresh oil.
To taste it, try a spoonful on its own or on bread with tomato. If you buy it to take home, keep it away from light and heat and use it within the following months, before the next campaign arrives.
Where to buy it in Sóller
The Cooperativa Agrícola Sant Bartomeu shop is at Carrer de Fornalutx 8, on the road out of Sóller towards Fornalutx, with free parking in front according to local directories. It sells olive oil, olives and other local produce. We found no published opening hours: call or check its website before going.
Other options: the Sóller market, with stalls of local produce, and our guide to local produce, which covers what to buy besides oil. When flying home with bottles, wrap them well and pack them in checked luggage if they exceed the cabin liquid limit.
