How the festival began
According to an interview published by Mallorca Magazin in 2026, the festival arose when the Dutch hotelier Jos Kuiper had a pianist, Alexander Malter, as a guest, and he asked why Deià, Pollença or Valldemossa had classical music festivals and Sóller did not. When the Museu del Mar opened in 2005, with an oratory, the two saw that the space suited concerts and founded the festival together. Kuiper is the festival director and Malter has been credited as artistic director.
Sources disagree on the year of the first concert, so we give no start date. October was chosen, according to the same interview, to avoid clashing with the summer festivals of Valldemossa and Pollença and the September one in Deià.
What the concerts are like
- Format: chamber music concerts, intimate and with a close, almost family feel.
- Programme: well-known composers such as Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert alongside less frequently played works.
- Days: Saturdays in October; the number of concerts varies each year.
- Artists: international musicians from chamber ensembles; the festival publishes the specific line-up.
For each year's line-up and dates, see the official website: festivalportdesoller.com.
Where it is held and how to get there
The main venue is the church in Port de Sóller, in the Port. With limited capacity, it is best to buy a ticket ahead on the official website, which says where to buy it each year.
- Getting there: the tram runs from the town down to the Port; see the guide to Port de Sóller.
- Dinner: before or after, at the Port restaurants; book if it is a Saturday.
Tips
- Buy tickets in time: capacity is limited.
- Allow extra time: parking in the Port can be tricky; the tram is easier.
- A light layer: October cools at night, and churches tend to be cool.
- With children: concerts are long and quiet; think twice if they are small.
- Phone on silent: quiet is expected during the music; applaud at the end of a piece or when the audience does.
Getting there and parking
Port de Sóller is a few kilometres from the town and the two are linked by the tram; the train runs from Palma to the town.
- By train and tram: the Sóller train runs from Palma and the tram links the town with the Port. It is the easiest way to get around on festival days.
- By car: park on the outskirts and walk; the guide to parking in Sóller explains the options. On the big days streets in the centre are closed and car parks fill early.
- By taxi or bus: see taxi and transport. If you are coming from elsewhere on the island, check getting to Sóller before you set off.
