What the island council has announced
The Consell de Mallorca, through its mobility department, has secured funding for a system that will tell drivers how many free spaces public car parks on the coast and in the Serra de Tramuntana have. It has two parts: 18 electronic signs on the access roads and a mobile app with real-time occupancy.
The total budget is 1.7 million euros. Of this, 1 million comes as aid from the European Union and Spain's Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service, through a Red.es programme with ERDF funds. According to Europa Press, the project was selected from 52 across Spain and is the only one in the Balearics. The council pays the rest.
It is not the first trial: in 2025 the council placed mobile signs next to car parks in the Tramuntana to test the idea.
What it means if you drive to Sóller
The sources mention the coast and the Tramuntana approaches, with the Ma-10 as reference, but give no list of signs and do not say whether car parks in Sóller or the Port will be included. Our practical reading:
- Less circling: if it works as announced, you will know before arriving whether there is space, rather than at the end of a winding road.
- Decide earlier: with occupancy on your phone you can choose another place, another time or public transport.
- Ma-10 traffic: Europa Press notes that congestion on this road has sometimes forced the Sóller tunnel to close.
Meanwhile: how to park in Sóller today
Until the system is running, plan ahead the old way. Parking in Sóller covers car parks, regulated zones and high-season tips. If you would rather leave the car, see getting to Sóller by TIB bus or train, bearing in mind that the train and tram take a winter break from 23 November.
What we don't know yet, and sources
No installation date, sign locations, app name or list of included car parks has been published. We will update this article when the council gives details.
