What happened

Sóller is setting up a low emission zone (ZBE) in the centre, even though the law does not require it for a town with fewer than 50,000 residents. According to the official information, the aim is better public health, less congestion in the old town and more sustainable mobility.

On 28 October the town hall published a notice for people who drive through the zone often. It asks for three things: check that the vehicle has its tax address in Sóller (meaning it is registered in the municipality and pays the local circulation tax), check that the vehicle and owner details are up to date, and, if you fall under a special case, request an authorisation with the right paperwork.

The town hall website defines the zone through a list of boundary roads, including the Desviament road, Avinguda d'Astúries, the Ma-2122, Carrer de Sant Jaume, Plaça d'Espanya and Carrer d'Isabel II. On the official map, entry points carry signs.

What it means for visitors

This part is our own reading, not something stated in the notice:

  • The notice is aimed at people who drive in the centre often, mainly residents and owners of vehicles registered in the municipality. It says nothing about visitors or rental cars, so we cannot say how they will be affected.
  • Fines are not being applied yet: the town hall site mentions an information phase without penalties but gives no start date.
  • Plan on not driving into the centre. Parking outside and walking in is the calmest option until clear rules for outside vehicles are published. Our parking in Sóller guide already explains the zone.
  • Set your sat nav carefully: choose a car park as the destination, not the main square.

Other ways to get around without a car: getting to Sóller and taxi and transport.

How to check your own case

  • Read the official ZBE page on the town hall website, with sections on vehicles, access and authorisations, specific cases and penalties.
  • Open the 28 October notice, which offers a PDF leaflet titled "Circules pel centre de Sóller".
  • If your situation is special, gather the documents before asking for an authorisation.
  • For questions, the town hall lists a Mobility Office on the ground floor of the building, open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 14:00. Contact details are on the town hall website.

What we do not know yet

The material we read does not say when enforcement will begin, what the zone's operating hours are, how large the fines are, or what rules apply to visitors and rental vehicles. It also gives no deadline for checking your details. We will update this page if any of that changes.

Frequently asked questions about the Sóller low emission zone

What is the town hall asking for?

That people who often drive in the centre check that their vehicle has its tax address in Sóller, that vehicle and owner details are correct and, where relevant, that they request an authorisation with the necessary documents.

When does the zone start working?

The town hall website says the date is not yet confirmed and will be announced through official channels. An information phase without fines comes first.

How will access be controlled?

By automatic number plate reading and a database of authorisations, according to the official information.

Does it affect tourists and rental cars?

The sources we read do not explain this. Until the rules are clear, the simplest approach is to park outside the centre and check the town hall website.

How big is the fine?

The pages we read give no amount. The town hall site has a section for penalties and regulations.

Where can I get help?

At the town hall Mobility Office on the ground floor, Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 14:00. Contact details are on the town hall website.
